(Morning) Lydia Burrill Reproduction Sampler

Instructor: Joanne Harvey of The Examplarery

Class Details

In December of 1799, George Washington, the first President of the United States, passed away. With the dawn of the 19th century came new challenges for our young country, and the memorializing of the former president and hero of our new nation was a very common theme for schoolgirl embroideries. Two of the most popular forms of needlework memorials were the creation of silk-work pictorial pieces and samplers with verses that honored him. The green ground selected for this sampler is referred to as Linsey Woolsey. This greenish ground appeared during the latter part of the 18th century in New England and could be found in examples from Maine to the Washington D.C. area.

Lydia Hammatt Burrill was born in Salem, Mass., and was christened on Oct. 3, 1790. At the age of 10, Lydia dedicated her charming Linsey Woolsey sampler to the honor of Washington. Lydia selected the sentiment expressed by Henry Lee at Washington’s eulogy: “First in war, first in peace and first in the hearts of his countrymen.” Her sentiment is a reflection of his words, “O Washington Thrice Glories Name, What Do Reward Can Man Decree.” The sampler will be worked on 32-count olive green linen and will measure approximately 14 3/4" x 11 3/4". It will use DMC cotton floss and feature the following stitches: cross stitch, Algerian eye and satin stitch. The class will also spend time viewing other embroideries that commemorate George Washington.
