The Stars Are Brightly Shining

The music of Christmas is absolutely the best, and one of my favorite carols is O Holy Night. It's such a powerful song, and I catch my breath every time I hear it. This year, instead of presents under the tree, I've added pillows and extra blankets so that I can relive a fond childhood memory of lying under the tree and falling asleep while watching the twinkling lights. Instead of trips to the mall, we'll load up in the car, grab some hot cider or hot chocolate, and drive around looking at sparkling decorations.

I think we'll hold tightly to traditions this holiday season and remember that it's a season of love and giving. Maybe it's an extra smile to a stranger while waiting in line at the grocery store, or maybe it's a kind word to the cashier at your favorite store during an insanely busy shopping day -- hold on to those warm holiday feelings and share them with those who might need that encouragement. If you have a couple of spare stitched ornaments, why not gift them to someone who needs a little extra joy? Remember, we're stitchers and we like to give. Whether you celebrate the birth of a tiny promised babe or the miracle of lamps burning steadily for eight days on one day's worth of oil, every one of us has a reason to celebrate life and the season. I wish you all a very joyous Christmas and a festive Hanukkah!

Until then, happy stitching!

Christy Schmitz is the former editor of Just CrossStitch and Sampler & Antique Needlework Quarterly. Stitching since the young age of 5 when her mom told her to "color with thread," Christy has held that needle and thread while finding a way to blend that art with her love of writing and editing as well. A devoted Southerner, this Mobile-born lady now makes her home in Birmingham, Ala., where she works in retail management as well as freelance writing and editing. She holds degrees in English, religious studies and literature. When she's not working, writing or stitching, you'll find her reading in the sun next to one of her two rescue beagle mixes.
