(Afternoon) Maria Futter Appleton 1831 English Georgian Sampler

Instructor: Giulia Manfredini of Giulia Punti Antichi

Class Details

Maria Futter Appleton worked this beautiful English sampler, which is a part of Giulia's private collection, in 1831. Maria was born to Mary Futter and baptized on Dec. 19, 1819, in Tunstead, Norfolk County, England. The baptismal record of St. Maryís in Tunstead does not list a father for Maria. Her mother, Mary Futter, married James Appleton in 1827, and he adopted Maria and gave her the name Marie Futter Appleton.

This Georgian sampler is worked in silk threads, mainly in hues of gold, blue and green, but also features steel blue, dark brown, burgundy, bronze, pale yellow and cream. The sampler is framed on all sides by a dense strawberry border and is structured in bands and sections. The upper area is made up by three rows of alphabets separated by undulating rows of floral vines. The third alphabet row consists of capital letters A to R worked in pulled eyelet stitch over four threads. The middle part of the sampler showcases two lovely floral plants surrounding the text, along with other smaller flowers and stars:

During the time of life allotted me

Grant me good God, my Health and Liberty.

I beg no more, if more thouírt pleas d to give,

I will with Thanks the Overplus receive.

The lower part of the sampler begins with a large thistle border stitched in shades of blue, gold, yellow and green. The motif-rich sampler then features a large band with a centrally located cartouche, which is worked in satin stitches, along with Maria's name and age (she was only 12 when she stitched the sampler) and the year 1831. The bottom part of her sampler also includes a lovely display of fruit trees, plants, flowers, birds and dogs.

This reproduction is worked on a beautiful 35-count Italian ecru linen and uses hand-dyed silk threads. The sampler features the following stitches: cross stitch over one and two threads, pulled eyelet stitch and satin stitch. The class project kit will include all materials as well as complete stitching instructions and information about the sampler motifs and symbolisms.
