Determining Fabric Cut Sizes

Stephanie W. asks: "How do you start a project from the top? I have always started dead center, but I would so love to learn how to do it from the top and work my way down. Please tell me your secret!"

Starting at the top left corner is my preference, Stephanie, and I'm so glad you asked about it. It's actually much easier than we all think. The first thing is to make sure you know the finished design size and how much additional fabric you have allowed. For instance, most JCS projects call for a 3-inch allowance on all sides; if you adhere to the cut size suggested by JCS, you can simply start 3 inches from the top and side. However, I always recommend checking the fabric cut size by calculating the design size and then "math" it from there. It saves time and frustrations later. For example, if your finished stitched design is calculated to be 8 x 10 inches, and your fabric is cut 14 x 16 inches, then measure in 3 inches from the top and 3 inches from the left and begin. The result should be a 3-inch border all around the stitched design. If you need a wider border, just double that number and add it to your design size.
