Smyrna Cross Stitch

Our expertise in specialty stitches is growing with each newsletter, so this time we will tackle the Smyrna cross stitch. This stitch is so easy that it will blow your mind, and you'll find yourself wanting to add it to almost every design you stitch. For the most part, a Smyrna cross stitch can be worked instead of a simple cross stitch in any design, and the result will give your project a more textured, unique appearance.

So, without further delay, let's take a look:

Smyrna cross stitch is at its very basis two cross stitches layered atop one another with the top one rotated 45 degrees. The base of the stitch is formed just like a cross stitch over the number of threads indicated -- bring needle up at bottom left corner (No. 1), down at No. 2, up at bottom right corner (No. 3) and down at upper left corner (No. 4). Then bring the needle up at the bottom of the X in the middle (No. 5) and pass it through to the back of the linen at the top at the middle (No. 6). Next bring the needle up at the left side of the X in the middle (No. 7) and pass needle through to back of fabric at middle of right side (No. 8). Secure and end thread.

Bring needle up at No. 1 and down at No. 2. Bring needle up at No. 3 and down at No. 4.

Bring needle back up at No. 5, pass the needle over the top of the existing stitches
and pass it through linen at No. 6.

Bring needle back up at No. 7, pass the needle over the top of the existing stitches
and pass it through linen at No. 8. Secure and end thread.
