How to -- Bead Me Up

In this newsletter, we're going to take a look at a simple way to add more bling and texture to your stitching by adding beads.

This simple step can be worked either as a full cross stitch or a 1/2 cross stitch, depending on the instructions given in the project. The bead direction depends on whether you work a 1/2 or full cross stitch. With a 1/2 cross stitch, the beads slant in the direction of the stitch. With a full cross stitch, the beads tend to be positioned straight up and down since the thread is being worked through both sides from both angles. Both options are correct; it just depends on the look you want for your piece and how many beads you're adding.

The addition can either be worked in place of a cross stitch or on top of a cross stitch; again, it depends on the design and instructions, so refer to them and keep in mind your desired finished appearance.

Adding a bead with a 1/2 cross stitch consists of one simple pass of the needle. Bring your threaded needle up at the bottom left corner (No. 1) of the "bead stitch," add one bead onto the needle, and then pass the needle back through at the upper right corner (No. 2) of the stitch. Secure and move on to the next stitch or bead. Use this to add multiple beads to a small section of stitching as it allows the beads to nestle closer together since they are slightly angled.

Attaching a bead using 1/2 cross stitch.

1. Bring needle up at No. 1 and add bead.

2. Pass needle down at No. 2.

Attaching a bead using a full cross stitch

Adding a bead with a full cross stitch consists of two simple passes of the needle. Bring your threaded needle up at the bottom left corner (No. 1) of the "bead stitch," add one bead onto the needle and then pass the needle back through at the upper right corner (No. 2) of the stitch. Bring the needle back up at the bottom right (No. 3) of the stitch, pass the needle through the bead again, and pass the needle to the back of the fabric at the upper left corner (No. 4). Secure and move on to next the stitch or bead.

1. Bring needle up at No. 1 and add bead.
2. Pass needle down at No. 2.
3. Bring needle up at No. 3 and pass back through bead.
4. Pass needle down at No. 4.
