A Note From the Editor

The crunch of leaves underfoot while walking to school. Stopping at apple stands on an early autumn road trip. The gasp as my fingers grasp spaghetti "brains" at the church's haunted house.

Early autumn! What a great time to create cross-stitch projects that harken back to childhood and make the present day more beautiful.

Just CrossStitch offers readers the chance to do just that. With projects ranging from the Halloween Spooktacular to sophisticated samplers, this issue will make you smile as you stitch and take you places where memory and imagination meet up.

You might not have a Halloween tree, but ornaments can go anywhere in your home that could use a bit of frightful fun. Even the "batroom" gets a decoration thanks to designer Elizabeth Spurlock. Spiders, black cats, jack-o'-lanterns -- they're all within these pages of exclusive designs.

The fall season, of course, is about more than Halloween, like apples, for example, which Nicoletta Farrauto dishes up in her primitive-style Amish Apple Sampler. These warm tones also appear in Elizabeth Spurlock's Splendor of Autumn.

For those who want non-frame options, we offer a pillow with a crazy-quilt pattern. You can also make a cross-stitch tray and coasters with Blackwork Journey's Autumn Leaves.

In addition to projects, we're adding a new history column, The Sampler Sleuth. In the inaugural installment, cross-stitch design detective Vickie LoPiccolo Jennett uncovers the story of princess behind a sampler from 1820.

Learning, stitching, decorating -- they're all part of making new memories for you and your family. Don't let that handful of haunted house spaghetti monopolize your mind power. Instead, grab some fabric and floss, and imagine new beauty filling your hands.

Stay in stitches,
